Tim Hutchison's Candidacy for Knox Mayor; Sen. Woodson on Tennessee Education

State Sen. Tim Burchett entered the race for Knox County mayor early. Many said that was to scare away other potential candidates.

But the race just got more interesting this week when former sheriff Tim Hutchison said he's entering the contest.

Harlow Sumerford is filling in this week for Gene Patterson, who is covering the Lemaricus Davidson trial. Harlow talks to Sheriff Hutchison about his decision to run and what he sees as the main issues of the election.

Tennessee ranks 41st on national achievement tests and 75 percent of our 8th graders are below average in reading and math. Only 17% of 9th graders right now will graduate from college within six years of high school graduation.

State Sen. Jamie Woodson (R-Dist. 6) serves as chairperson for the State Education Committee. In the second segment of this week's show she discusses how the state needs to address its education problems in these tough economic times.

Then, 6 News political analyst George Korda and Cortney Piper, with SRW and Associates, join Harlow for a final word.

#2 Police lineups

There is increasing evidence that presenting photo lineups to witnesses in the form of a six-pack (six photos on a single page) results in more identification errors than presenting the pictures one at a time. Five states and several local jurisdictions have moved to this method, which has been shown to produce fewer errors. Here's an article about it:

I wonder if there is any movement within the State of Tennessee or any local jurisdictions in the state to make this change in the interest of better criminal prosecutions.
