Two big stories dominated the news in Knoxville this past week. One was the sudden departure of of Lane Kiffin, who went from head football coach of Tennessee to head coach at the University of Southern California in a matter of hours.

The other big story, on a global scale as well as local, was the devastating earthquake that struck the country of Haiti, killing tens of thousands of its residents.

As it turns out, there are many ties to Haiti here in East Tennessee. Among them, church and other groups which have been working with Haitians in relief efforts from the hurricanes of 2008 and with getting many of the country's orphaned adopted to families here in East Tennessee.

Joining Gene Patterson in the first segment to put this latest tragedy in context is Dr. Bertin Louis Jr., a cultural anthropologist and Africana studies lecturer who's written about Haiti.

A major blow to UT football fans was struck with the departure of Lane Kiffin from Tennessee. Longtime UT employee and sports historian Tom Mattingly offers a bit of perspective on the events of the week.

Note: This week's program was recorded before the university officially announced that Derek Dooley had been hired to replace Kiffin.

Then, joining Gene for a final word are 6 News political analyst George Korda and political columnist Frank Cagle.
